Corner Brook braces for more job cuts at newsprint mill
Last Updated: Wednesday, June 24, 2009 | 6:57 AM NT

Workers are expecting to hear on Wednesday about further job cuts at the only newsprint mill still operating in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Corner Brook Pulp and Paper's parent company, Kruger Inc., is expected to make an announcement about the future of its mill. Employees say they believe both unionized and non-union staff will be affected.

Canada's newsprint producers have been shedding jobs and cutting capacity in an effort to stay afloat.

Paper mill; Employees to vote on concession proposal
The Western Star

It appears much of the future of Corner Brook Pulp/Paper will unfold this week.

An unnamed source [said] the mill’s union employees are about to vote on a [Kruger] proposal...contain[ing] a number of concessions.

Unconfirmed reports indicate Kruger is asking...employees to take a 10% pay cut, and the future of the mill lies in whether such concessions are accepted. Similar proposals were presented/unaccepted in...Grand Falls-Windsor/Stephenville, and those mills were eventually closed.

All eight...unions at Corner Brook Pulp and Paper...voted to agree to a wage deferral request from Kruger Inc., but they are not finished making decisions about their future yet.

But the wage deferral is only the first step for some of the unions...

“The locals that work inside the mill are presently dealing with a further restructuring, so I guess there will be a Part 2 for the mill locals,” said Healey.

No change in trial date for paper mill
CORNER BROOK
The Western Star

Corner Brook Pulp and Paper will still be going to trial in June to defend a charge of depositing a deleterious substance into waters frequented by fish.

The paper company pleaded not guilty last month to allegedly violating the federal Fisheries Act in October 2007 and a trial was set for June 14-18.

The matter was called in provincial court in Corner Brook Friday for a status update and will be called again for another update in March, but the trial date remains the same.

Corner Brook Pulp and Paper pleads guilty
Jun 14, 2010 | In Environmental News | Send feedback »

KrugerKruger's Corner Brook Pulp and Paper has changed its plea to guilty in regards to an accidental spill in October 2007.

About 7,400 litres of a solution of 50% caustic soda — also known as sodium hydroxide, a substance harmful to fish — was spilled onto a paved area of the mill property. The substance then flowed into a storm sewer system and ultimately ended up in the Humber Arm.

The size of the fine will be announced on June 30.
