The government of Mexico is planning to reintroduce five endangered Mexican gray wolves in northeastern Sonora - within a wolf's walking distance of Arizona.

The reintroduction...has forced U.S. state and federal agencies to scramble. Their problem is to figure out what to do if a wolf wanders north into the United States.

So far, their answer isn't pleasing ranchers: They'll treat any wolves from Mexico as fully endangered and therefore largely untouchable.

Federal agency agrees to deadline on AZ, NM wolves

By SUE MAJOR HOLMES (AP) – 5/15/10

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A federal judge in Arizona has approved a settlement requiring the USF&WS to issue a finding by the end of July on a petition that seeks to list the Mexican gray wolf on the federal endangered species list separate from other North American gray wolves.

Conservationists submitted petitions last August, arguing a separate listing was biologically warranted and legally required.
