Energy commissioner says sustainability criteria would be too expensive.
The European Commission's energy department confirmed there will be no green safeguards on use of plant/woody biomass in the EU.
The decision is a victory for the energy department.... [T]he environment department argued for binding legal standards to ensure only the most environmentally-friendly biomass was used.
[T]he Commission said EU countries will be free to set up their own national schemes to promote biomass without binding standards on the origins of plant/tree matter.
